Mark Souweidane to Be Honored With Cristian Rivera Foundation Vision of Hope Award

Dr. Mark Souweidane, Vice Chairman of the Weill Cornell Brain and Spine Center and Director of Pediatric Neurological Surgery, will be honored next Monday night, September 30, with the 2013 Cristian Rivera Foundation Vision of Hope Award. The award will be presented at the fifth annual Cristian Rivera Foundation Celebrity Gala.

Thanks to a generous gift from the Mortimer Sackler Foundation, the NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center has created the Sackler Brain and Spine Institute at its East 68th Street facility. The new Sackler Brain and Spine Institute brings together neurological surgery, neurology, and all the related medical fields a patient might need when being treated for a disease or condition of the brain or spine.

Children’s Brain Tumor Project Researcher Awarded 3-Year DoD Grant

Yujie Huang, PhD, has been awarded a three-year, $400,000 grant from the Department of Defense for a research project investigating how children’s brain tumors progress. Dr. Huang, who works in Dr. Jeffrey Greenfield's pediatric neuro-oncology laboratory, will be working on “Characterizing and Targeting Bone Marrow-Derived Inflammatory Cells in Driving the Malignancy and Progression of Childhood Astrocytic Brain Tumors.”

Dr. Grunert Takes First Place in Basic Science at MINS

Dr. Peter Grunert, spine fellow, was recently awarded the first-place award for best basic science abstract and presentation at the annual meeting of the Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery Society (MINS).

Sports on the Brain

Tickets are now available for a five-session course, “Neuroscience of Sports: Your Brain in Action,” to be presented at the American Museum of Natural History on Monday evenings at 6 pm starting September 16, 2013.
