New Clinical Trial Tests Safety of New Approach to Spinal Metastatic Tumors

Dr. Athos Patsalides is now enrolling patients in a Phase I research study on spinal metastatic disease (SMD). This new trial will test the safety of a new minimally invasive treatment called spinal intra-arterial chemotherapy (SIAC) in patients with SMD.

Dr. Theodore Schwartz and Dr. Gabriella Wernicke Present Clinical Findings on Cesium-131 Study

The presentation was made at the annual Scientific Meeting of the Society for Neuro-Oncology (SNO) in Washington, DC. Their study compares the relative effectiveness of Cesium-131 versus other common therapies in treating newly diagnosed metastatic brain tumors.

Dr. Hilarie Tomasiewicz, a first-year resident in neurological surgery, was recently recognized by the Shining Star program at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Patients and family members are invited to name Shining Stars who provided exceptional patient care during their treatment here. Dr. Tomasiewicz was cited by a patient, who told her that "You are the most precious doctor; sent to me especially from God. He used your hand, heart and skills to save me."

Dr. Theodore Schwartz Awarded NIH Grant for Epilepsy Laser Treatment Research

Neurosurgeon Dr. Theodore Schwartz, along with Dr. Chris Schaffer of Biomedical Engineering at Cornell University in Ithaca, has received a prestigious 2-year NIH grant to lead research on ground-breaking laser treatments for epilepsy. In his lab at the Weill Cornell Brain and Spine Center, Dr. Schwartz will use a femtosecond laser on animal models to make microscopic incisions in portions of the brain in hopes to prevent epileptic seizures yet preserve function.
