Children’s Brain Tumor Project Plans “Summer Sprint” As Supporters Step Up

Thanks to the generosity of a number of donors, the summer of 2016 will be an unprecedented one at the Children’s Brain Tumor Project (CBTP). With grants and gifts from families and foundations, the CBTP plans to fill the lab with an impressive array of medical students and fellows conducting research at an amazing pace. The newly funded summer positions are:

St. Baldrick’s and ABTA Summer Fellows: Emilie George and Raymond Chang will be testing new drugs and drug combinations against gliomatosis cerebri and DIPG, funded by summer fellowship grants from the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and the American Brain Tumor Association.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) POST Scholar: Umberto Tosi will use PET imaging to evaluate the cancer drug dasatinib, modified to fluoresce, in mice models with DIPG. The position is funded by the ALSF’s Pediatric Oncology Student Training (POST) program.

AANS/NREF Medical Student Summer Research Fellow: Christopher Marnell will test two-dimensional peptide-based nanofibers (NFP) as drug carriers to slow clearance rates and improve the distribution of chemotherapeutics injected into a DIPG tumor.

Samuel Jeffers Summer Thalamic Glioma Medical Student Fellow: The CBTP is recruiting for a summer medical student fellow to acquire tissue samples of thalamic gliomas for future study. The position is funded by the Samuel Jeffers Childhood Cancer Foundation.

Many thanks to the Cristian Rivera Foundation, foundation board member Craig Serra, and Pfizer for their generous donation in support of these summer fellows. With their help, we are able to supply our summer fellows with the drugs, animal models, and infrastructure they need to do their work.

We hope for great things this summer, and we are grateful to our generous supporters for making it happen.

UPDATE! Two more CRF board members have stepped up to support our summer sprint. Read more about it here
