First Neuro ICU in Queens Now Open at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens

With the opening of a state-of-the-art neuro ICU at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, the borough has its first and only high-tech unit dedicated to the care and recovery of patients with brain and spine conditions. The 20-bed unit features all private rooms, each fully equipped with everything a neuro patient needs for optimal care.

“We are so gratified to have this unit open,” says Dr. John Park, chief of neurosurgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens and professor of neurosurgery at Weill Cornell Medicine. “Before this, we sometimes had to transfer complex patients to other units, or even into Manhattan, to ensure optimal care. Now we can provide seamless care from admission through surgery and recovery, all right here in Queens.” Dr. Park, who is the only neurosurgeon in Queens to have earned the Castle Connolly Top Doctors distinction, leads the neurosurgical team at NYP Queens, with offices in Flushing, Jackson Heights, Long Island City, and Fresh Meadows.

The new unit allows for 24/7 monitoring, personalized treatment plans, rehabilitation support, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The unit has a dedicated waiting room for families, an on-site CT scanner, and bedside EEGs and surgical booms.

“We are dedicated to providing world-class care to all our patients, at all our locations,” said Dr. Philip E. Stieg, Margaret and Robert J. Hariri, MD ’87, PhD ’87 Professor of Neurological Surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine and Neurosurgeon-in-Chief of NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. “Having an on-site neuro ICU for our patients in Queens is a major step forward – we are the only hospital in the borough to offer such sophisticated ICU care specifically to neuro patients, who will benefit greatly from having this level of care available to them. This is the latest growth in the Weill Cornell Medicine sphere, which is centered on the Upper East Side and now extends to Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens.”
