Weill Cornell Medicine Launches New CSF Leak Program

Gayle Salama, MD, and John Park, MD, PhD, have been named co-directors of the new CSF Leak Program at Weill Cornell Medicine. Dr. Salama is a neuroradiologist and Director of Spine Imaging and Interventions; she specializes in the advanced imaging required to diagnose and locate a CSF leak. Dr Park is a neurological surgeon with expertise in CSF leaks; he is also chief of neurological surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens. Together Dr. Salama and Dr. Park will lead a comprehensive program of diagnostics and treatment that will ensure our patients receive the best possible care.

“CSF leaks can be complicated, difficult to locate, and challenging to treat,” says Dr. Philip E. Stieg, Chair and Neurosurgeon-in-Chief of NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and the Margaret and Robert J. Hariri Professor of Neurological Surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine. “Symptoms can mimic those of many other conditions, so getting an accurate diagnosis is key. The advanced imaging available here through Dr. Salama’s team is unparalleled in diagnosing and locating the source of a CSF leak, and Dr. Park is a highly skilled surgeon with expertise in repairing these leaks when surgery is indicated. They collaborate closely with colleagues in neurology and neuroradiology to determine the best course of treatment for each individual patient.”

“I couldn’t imagine a better team for this new program,” says Dr. Robert Min, Professor and Chair of Radiology at Weill Cornell Medicine and Radiologist-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. The close collaboration between radiology and neurosurgery, at a major academic center with state-of-the-art imaging and a wide range of treatment options, will ensure our patients get the very best in diagnostics and care.”

The CSF Leak Program formalizes a longstanding practice of collaboration among disciplines to care for patients. For more information, see our CSF Leak Program page.
